Learn the incredible history of Chicago Pile 1 and the urgent need to produce pure uranium for its success.
Join award-winning author, Teresa Wilhelm Waldof, in celebrating World Nuclear Energy Day
In February 1942, leaders of the Manhattan Project had a problem: to prove a controlled nuclear chain reaction was possible, they needed pure uranium—tons of it and in less than ten months. With only a few grams in existence, there was little hope anyone could achieve such a feat. Harley Wilhelm, a chemistry professor at Iowa State College, rose to the challenge. He provided the core uranium for the Chicago Pile 1 experiment on December 2, 1942. Wilhelm then invented the mass production process, the Ames Process, which is still in use today.
Learn how Wilhelm accomplished what others had not, enduring explosions, fires, and other obstacles while producing the millions of pounds of uranium needed for Oak Ridge to go live and for the Manhattan Project to succeed.

The pace of technological progress can be a little strange sometimes. Case in point..... The year is 1956, and the world's first commercial #nuclear reactor is sitting on a Norfolk & Western #railroad siding in Hagerstown, MD, having just been dropped off by a coal-fired steam locomotive after the first leg of its journey to the Shippingport Atomic Power Station nuclear plant at Shippingport, PA.
A Pennsylvania Railroad diesel locomotive brought it the rest of the way, and the reactor was putting power into the grid about sixteen months later on the date of December 2nd, 1957; exactly 15 years after the first critical reaction at Fermi's Chicago Pile 1.
Westinghouse designed the reactor, which was built at Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga, TN, but because of the reactor's bulk (it's actually taller than the locomotive, which is normally a no-no), it had to follow an indirect route to its destination.

Today is #WorldNuclearEnergyDay!
December 2nd is no ordinary date. It marks two historic milestones:
🔬 The world’s first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction by Fermi’s Chicago Pile-1 in 1942.
⚡ The startup of the first commercial nuclear power reactor in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, exactly 15 years later in 1957.
💡Today, nuclear energy powers millions of homes and industries with clean, reliable energy, contributes to cutting-edge technologies and supports the fight against climate change.
But World Nuclear Energy Day isn’t just about the systems and reactors—it’s about the people. 👨🏼🔧👨🏻🏭👩🏼💼👩🏾⚖️ From engineers and operators to policymakers and innovators, this industry is powered by those who believe in a sustainable future.
Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the critical role nuclear plays in the global energy mix and the talented individuals driving this sector forward. Together, we are critical mass, shaping a brighter, more resilient future. 🌟

Southern Nuclear celebrates Enrico Fermi
Today is #WorldNuclearEnergyDay! ⚛️ This marks the 83rd anniversary of the first nuclear chain reaction, which took place on Dec. 2, 1942, and was led by Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago’s football field.
Here are 5️⃣ fun facts about the historical event:
1️⃣ Led by Fermi, 49 scientists attended the event, with Leona Marshall being the only female researcher present. 👩🔬
2️⃣ During the early years of the #AtomicAge, the term “pile” was used to describe the device that controls the nuclear fission reaction, which later became known as a “reactor”. 🔋
3️⃣ The scientists used instruments named after Winnie the Pooh characters – Piglet, Tigger and Pooh – to monitor the reaction. 🍯
4️⃣ Scientist George Well withdrew the cadmium-plated control rod, initiating the first controlled chain reaction. ⚡️
5️⃣ The group celebrated with a bottle of Chianti poured into paper cups, and most participants signed the wine bottle’s label, which served as the only written record of those who took part in the experiment. 🥤
