Moving Big Data requires Big Energy!

    Presentation by John Laurie

Will the digital society achieve its circular economy goals?
TrustTech, the must-attend event for professionals in innovative payments and identification solutions, was held on December 2. As AI, IoT, 5G, blockchain, and electric mobility redefine our habits, their energy needs are skyrocketing. This raises a key question: how can  we sustainably power this transformation?

With this in mind, Sir John Laurie Bt, President of Progrès Nucléaire and Head of  Industrial Architecture at NAAREA, spoke alongside Nuecir at a round table discussion on the energy requirements of digital transactions.

With  its liquid molten salt fuel, the advanced, modular, and very small  micro-reactor developed by NAAREA represents a breakthrough innovation.  It paves the way for a vision of nuclear energy that is more sustainable, more affordable, and perfectly suited to the growing  demands of the digital society.

NAAREA (Nuclear Abundant Affordable Resourceful Energy for All) is a French company proposing an alternative to fossil fuels, thanks to innovative and sustainable next-generation nuclear power.
NAAREA will produce carbon-free energy by reusing long-lived nuclear waste. With its nuclear microreactors, NAAREA will bring a complementary offering to the energy mix, one that is decentralized and can be installed close to industrial consumers and in remote areas.

Learn more about Uranium and Join award-winning author Teresa Wilhelm Waldof in celebrating World Nuclear Energy Day

    Before Oppenheimer, There Was Wilhelm

Learn the incredible history of Chicago Pile 1 and the urgent need to produce pure uranium for its success.

Join award-winning author, Teresa Wilhelm Waldof, in celebrating World Nuclear Energy Day

In February 1942, leaders of the Manhattan Project had a problem: to prove a controlled nuclear chain reaction was possible, they needed pure uranium—tons of it and in less than ten months. With only a few grams in existence, there was little hope anyone could achieve such a feat. Harley Wilhelm, a chemistry professor at Iowa State College, rose to the challenge. He provided the core uranium for the Chicago Pile 1 experiment on December 2, 1942. Wilhelm then invented the mass production process, the Ames Process, which is still in use today.

Learn how Wilhelm accomplished what others had not, enduring explosions, fires, and other obstacles while producing the millions of pounds of uranium needed for Oak Ridge to go live and for the Manhattan Project to succeed.

Teresa Wilhelm Waldof is the world’s leading expert on the Ames Project Section of the Manhattan Project. Her book, Wilhelm’s Way: The Inspiring Story of the Iowa Chemist Who Saved the Manhattan Project, is the winner of numerous awards including the Minnesota Book Award for Nonfiction and the Excellence in Iowa History Award. Anthropocene Institute celebrates World Nuclear Energy Day with Video Post

Today is World Nuclear Energy Day! Here’s just a few of the reasons we love this powerful energy source:

    1. Carbon-Free Power: Nuclear energy is a clean, carbon-free baseload energy source. It generates nearly half of the United States' clean energy, making it a cornerstone in the fight to reduce carbon emissions.

    2. Improved Air Quality: By displacing energy sources like coal and natural gas (methane), nuclear energy has prevented millions of deaths linked to air pollution from burning fossil fuels over its operational lifetime.

    3. Exceptional Efficiency: Nuclear fuel is remarkably efficient. A single fuel pellet, the size of a gummy bear, can produce the same energy as a ton of coal, enabling high energy output with minimal waste.

    4. Unmatched Reliability: Nuclear power plants operate at full capacity 93% of the time, far exceeding other energy sources like wind and solar, ensuring a steady and dependable energy supply.

Nuclear energy stands as a powerful, sustainable solution to modern energy challenges. Let’s celebrate its contribution to a cleaner and more secure energy future!

The Shippingport Reactor celebrated on World Nuclear Energy Day 2025

The pace of technological progress can be a little strange sometimes. Case in point..... The year is 1956, and the world's first commercial #nuclear reactor is sitting on a Norfolk & Western #railroad siding in Hagerstown, MD, having just been dropped off by a coal-fired steam locomotive after the first leg of its journey to the Shippingport Atomic Power Station nuclear plant at Shippingport, PA.

A Pennsylvania Railroad diesel locomotive brought it the rest of the way, and the reactor was putting power into the grid about sixteen months later on the date of December 2nd, 1957; exactly 15 years after the first critical reaction at Fermi's Chicago Pile 1.

Westinghouse designed the reactor, which was built at Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga, TN, but because of the reactor's bulk (it's actually taller than the locomotive, which is normally a no-no), it had to follow an indirect route to its destination.
