The big day may have come and gone, but the energy it generated and the excitement it created keeps on ticking. World Nuclear Energy Day 2023 was epic in size, influence and outreach.
World Nuclear Energy Day celebratory events spanned several time zones and featured prominent educators, activists and supporters from every continent, focused on the crucial role that educators play in combating misinformation while also highlighting the positive role that nuclear plays in the climate change battle and why we need transformative nuclear energy education now.
Please send your pictures of your celebrations and events and we will post in the "Gallery".
About World Nuclear Energy Day
This is the one day when people around the globe celebrate the virtues and benefits of nuclear energy, open their shops for tours (both virtual and physical), discuss new technologies, and work to include nuclear energy in legislation at the local, regional, national and international levels.
World Nuclear Energy Day aims to raise awareness of the many positive contributions that nuclear energy systems make to our society. World Nuclear Energy Day celebrates the people that design, build, operate and support the broad range of technologies from large systems down to tiny micro-nuclear. Together we celebrate, with YOU at the center.
Connecting with one another and sharing expertise is critical for everyone working in the nuclear energy market. Connecting with one another and sharing expertise is critical for everyone working in the nuclear energy market. World Nuclear Energy Day helps keep these connections alive not only on this one special day but also provides the impetus for enthusiasm all year round. We are building our future together, on local and global scales; different people and places united in a drive for vibrant communities of nuclear energy advocates.
Date: December 2, annually is "World Nuclear Energy Day"
This date was chosen because it is the anniversary of Fermi's self-sustaining reaction!
This date was selected to acknowledge BOTH the first date for a self-sustaining chain reaction and also the date of the start-up of the first commercial-scale electric power reactor. Fermi’s first nuclear reactor named the Chicago Pile-1 became the first to create a self-sustaining chain reaction on December 2, 1942. In tribute to Fermi, the first commercial-sized power reactor in Shippingport, Pennsylvania went critical also on the date of December 2nd, in 1957; exactly 15 years later on the same day. "We Are Critical Mass"
Each year World Nuclear Energy Day highlights one key aspect of the nuclear energy and power industry.
This year the theme title is "We Are Critical Mass." The concept of “critical mass” was first used in nuclear physics. It represents the minimum amount of a fissionable material that will support a self-sustaining chain reaction. A second definition explains socio-dynamic phenomena that drive actions and behaviors of large segments of the population. Surveys have marked a shift in support for nuclear energy with over 50% of adults saying they favor more nuclear generation for electricity. Thus, we have reached critical mass!
2024 Hashtag = #WeAreCriticalMass
Share the Passion
For nuclear energy advocates and leaders, World Nuclear Energy Day is an opportunity for both the technical nuclear community and their business development peers to share in their mutual passion while preserving and promoting relationships, traditions and shared memories. Swing open the doors (both virtually and physically) and have some fun while also educating those who attend.

Heroes and Sheroes!
This website maintains information about this global project and connects with those wishing to organize celebrations and events. Individual and corporate organizers are encouraged to check back for event details. Organizers can download a range of promotional collateral from this website including press releases for local media, tweetables, flyers and online banners. Event and brand logos are made available via this main website.
World Nuclear Energy Day aims to create awareness and drive nuclear energy literacy while also improving the teaching of energy efficiency, resilience, sustainability, power technology, carbon reduction and more generally, the "celebration of nuclear energy and the people who make it happen".
The Hashtag is #WorldNuclearEnergyDay

"We Are Critical Mass"
The World Nuclear Energy Day logo is a blend of great design and practical format. The date is December 2nd, annually. We've created a different "Theme" concept each year. This year the theme title is "We Are Critical Mass". Feel free to use this theme if you wish, but it is not required.
As background, nuclear energy spans not only the generation of electrical power, but also nuclear medicine, nuclear propulsion and more! Hence, we are comfortable that this theme term will span these realms.
The concept of “critical mass” was first used in nuclear physics. It represents the minimum amount of a fissionable material that will support a self-sustaining chain reaction. At this mass, the neutrons released in one fission reaction can trigger adjacent atoms to fission. A second definition explains socio-dynamic phenomena that drive actions and behaviors of large segments of the population. Also described as “critical density” in ecology, “threshold models of collective behavior” in sociology, and inflection points for policy influence in gender politics, the term illustrates how a spark ignites social movement.
Since 2022, responses to surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center have marked a shift in support for nuclear energy in the U.S. with over 50% of adults saying they favor more nuclear generation for electricity. International support is similarly on the rise. In January 2024 World Nuclear News published an article on a global survey that found high public support for nuclear energy. “One-and-a-half times more people support the use of nuclear energy than oppose it.” A social movement is coalescing into an international energy policy direction. We are poised to unlock and mobilize new nuclear technologies that will improve the general welfare of all the world’s people. We are critical mass.
